How to Burn Your Tibetan Rope Incense

Because rope incense is made by hand-twisting aromatic herbs and resins inside traditional Lokta paper, it burns a bit differently than a standard incense stick. Follow these steps for the perfect experience:

  1. Select a Heat-Safe Surface: Place your rope on a fireproof dish, such as a ceramic plate, a stone, a cast-iron smudge pot, or a bed of clean sand or ash. You can also use a special rope burner, which looks like a stand with a hook at the top and a fireproof base.  You would insert the hook into the larger end and hang it upside down.

  2. Light the Tip: Hold the rope by the thicker end and light the thinner, twisted tip with a match or lighter.

  3. Wait for the Glow: Let the tip flame for about 5–10 seconds to ensure the herbs and resins have caught, then gently blow out the flame.

  4. Position for Airflow: Lay the rope flat on your heat-safe surface. If it struggles to stay lit, try propping it up slightly or placing it on a bed of incense ash to allow oxygen to reach all sides.

  5. Enjoy the Sacred Smoke: As the Lokta paper and Nag Champa resins smolder together, they will release a delicious, grounding aroma.

Safety First: Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep away from flammable objects, children, and pets.
